Confucius Institute TV Documentary

Project Description

Made possible by funding through Hanban and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, The Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the educational, cultural and economic ties between China and Alberta through Chinese language training. The CIE was placed in Edmonton in partnership with its host, Edmonton Public Schools, and has grown to serve 16 local schools, a school in Lethbridge as well as the larger community.

Urban Video was hired by the Confucius Institute in celebration of the parent Institute’s 10-year anniversary in China. The video showcases the institute’s history, services, achievements and goals for future growth, while also demonstrating the ultimate vision of promoting the development of Chinese language education, cultural exchange and economic ties between China and Canada.

Production was unique for this project. To ensure the video could be broadcast in China we filmed in interlaced PAL format (1080i50). We capitalized on the captivating, original music played by CIE music students and instructors and used it in the video’s soundtrack. Urban Video handled all of the pre-production research and creative, and also managed all the pre-interviews, scheduling and interviews. Post-production required Closed Captions in both English and Chinese characters.

The Confucius Institute Headquarters will be selecting a handful of these videos to be broadcast on television in China in the fall, and Shaw TV Edmonton will also be broadcasting the project in the next couple of months. The Confucius Institute in Edmonton has embedded this video on its website, and will also be playing the video at its annual Confucius Institute Day event in September. They will also be handing out the DVDs to their special guests.
