Looking for a creative way to raise awareness of and prevent vehicle safety incidences with its staff, The City of Edmonton’s Drainage Services operation hired Urban Video to produce a unique safety video. The City of Edmonton’s Drainage Services branch provides sanitary and stormwater drainage services to Edmontonians by planning, building, operating and maintaining the City’s drainage infrastructure.
The video was meant to not only educate staff, but to inspire them to be safe whenever they are operating a vehicle, which is what the majority of staffers do in a daily shift. In 2012, the Drainage Services team clocked over 2 million kilometers in a City of Edmonton vehicle. During that time, there were 40 vehicle incidents that were deemed preventable, and that is precisely what the video needed to address. To create more impact, the video also included photos from a few of the 2012 incidents.
Safety Instructor Doug Willows explained that many of these incidents could have been avoided if drivers had someone backing them up and that was a primary message of the video. Using a documentary style of filming, the video uses a narrator as well as interviews to tell the safety story. We wanted to keep the visuals attractive and fast-paced, so the audience absorbed the messages, but also enjoyed it for the sense of pride it builds for the work they do. After the official viewing by all staff, this video now serves as part of the training program for new staff members.
